In 2020, the Pittsburgh region and communities across the country confronted longtime, systemic inequities. Going forward, we must ask ourselves: what makes our regional response more than a moment? What shifts a moment of awareness into a sustained movement resulting in greater diversity, equity, and inclusion for our region?
Join Vibrant Pittsburgh on October 13, 2021 for the 2021 Regional Economic Inclusion Summit: More than a Moment!, a virtual learning experience designed to transform sentiment into organizational change that is measurable, actionable, and authentically Pittsburgh!
In 2010, Vibrant Pittsburgh was born after conversations between corporate and community leaders, comprehensive data analysis and research and the stark realization that the Pittsburgh region cannot sustain opportunities for economic growth and vitality unless it dramatically increases the diversity of its population and workforce. Vibrant Pittsburgh was established as an economic development nonprofit to be the catalyst to accelerate the growth rate of diverse workers in the region. We are proud of the distance we have covered and what we have accomplished, collectively. As we continue our work, Vibrant Pittsburgh remains focused on the road ahead, as there is still much more work to do. Together, the Pittsburgh region will show the world how to create a growing, thriving place where people of all backgrounds are welcomed.
The global COVID-19 pandemic pushed back our celebration of 10 years of effort, investment, and results to make Pittsburgh workplaces more inclusive and equitable. Join us in 2021 for a belated 10th Anniversary Celebration!
The Greater Pittsburgh area is one of the least diverse metropolitan areas relative to the top 100 regions and has the smallest percentage of diverse workers as compared to other competing regions. Moreover, The Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s Inflection Point Report noted that the region’s workers of color are leaving the region at a faster rate than their in-migration to the region (2016). The report notes that, “in professional occupations, Pittsburgh sees a brain drain of workers of color; 14% of departing African Americans have a bachelor’s degree, compared to only 10% of those entering the region.”
Workers of the future are more racially and ethnically diverse than ever: by 2044 more than half of Americans will identify as members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. It is an economic imperative for our region, and our region’s organizations, to become more equitable and inclusive. To ensure long-term sustainable growth, we need to increase the flow of diverse talent pursuing opportunities in the region and increase the retention rate of diverse talent new to and already in the region. This means increasing the ease at which newcomers and native under-represented minorities can feel connected, engaged, and productive in southwestern PA.
With the competition for skilled talent increasing around the world, our region needs to constantly assess its “value proposition” and engage a diversity of professionals currently living in the region in the crafting of solutions that will address the region’s growth aspirations. The Regional Economic Inclusion Summit provides resources, networking, and convening opportunities to our region’s businesses, furthering the conversation and commitment to the promising practices that move the needle for our region.
